\nAfter the Los Angeles Dodgers signed free agent left-hander Zack Greinke, it became clear that Rays pitcher James Shields was the next available target via trade. On Sunday evening, Tampa Bay traded Shields and Wade Davis to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Wil Myers, pitchers Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard.<\/p>\n
Focusing on Myers, who turned 22 years old a day after he was traded, will be evaluated in spring training and will see if he can break the major league roster.<\/p>\n
“As a player you want to be confident in your ability and know that you think you’re ready for the big leagues,” Myers said. “But it’s not my decision to make; you leave it in the hands of the front office.”<\/p>\n
Last season Myers spent his time in double-A Northwest Arkansas and moved up to triple-A Omaha finishing the season batting .314 with 37 home runs, 109 RBIs combined.<\/p>\n
As we look ahead the Rays will not have to rely fully on free agency to fill out the roster but they are still in need of a designated hitter and bullpen help. One thing about the bullpen is certain; Joe Maddon has his ninth-inning guy in Fernando Rodney.<\/p>\n
